A plant oasis between infrastructures
Garden open to the Baix Empordà landscape
This garden, located in a single-family house in Ermedàs, Palafrugell, establishes a direct relationship between the house and the landscape of the Baix Empordà. The dwelling is situated slightly elevated above the perimeter of the plot, with views over a landscape of gentle topography, cultivated fields and small wooded areas. Based on this condition, the project transforms the outdoor space into an open and continuous garden, where topography, vegetation and views create a serene experience fully integrated into the surroundings, while at the same time giving continuity to the whole and resolving the existing small level differences.
Topography becomes the main tool of the intervention. Through gentle earth movements, the different outdoor areas are connected to one another, and a small dune is created that makes it possible to control the views from the house, concealing the foreground and opening the view towards the distant landscape. The garden is thus constructed as a continuous surface that accompanies the site and reinforces its perception.
The new perimeter topography makes it possible to place the owners’ rose collection at the lower point, where it is protected from the wind and integrated within a broader composition. Viewed from the house, the roses find in the slope of the dune a background that organises their presence and reinforces their reading. The great variety of forms and colours within the collection leads to the use of homogeneous and neutral supporting vegetation, both in structure and colour, composed mainly of Perovskia atriplicifolia i Pittosporum tobira nana.
In front of this planting, beds of Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’, are arranged, accompanying the seasonal cycle of the roses, concealing them when they lose their leaves and, at the same time, establishing a relationship of continuity with the surrounding agricultural landscape. This same species is also used to define new grass beds that reorganise the internal circulation of the garden and accentuate the connection between the plot and the territory. The planting is not understood solely as an ornamental resource, but as a living structure capable of organising spaces, views and transitions.
On the sides of the property, the existing shrub mass of holm oaks (Quercus ilex), laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) and laurels (Laurus nobilis) that defines the relationship with the neighboring plot is reinforced, also incorporating deciduous species such as Hydrangea paniculata. Likewise, the existing planting of Nassella tenuissima is extended alongside olive trees and cypresses, consolidating this boundary and reinforcing the sense of continuity with the new vegetation and the nearby landscape.
Overall, the project transforms a residential garden into a space capable of intensifying the relationship with the landscape of the Baix Empordà. The topography, vegetation and work on the views create an open and continuous garden, where each intervention contributes to giving coherence to the whole and to turning the exterior into a habitable, tranquil extension fully integrated into the place.
