A garden at the foot of Collserola

Gaziel — Gaziel Garden - Barcelona, Spain - AEland-FPPL9230

This garden is located on the ground floor of a residential building at the foot of Collserola, in Barcelona. The project transforms the outdoor space into a domestic landscape with its own identity, where geometry, vegetation, and continuity with the interior spaces create a daily experience of calm, privacy, and well-being. Conceived as a habitable extension of the dwelling, the garden blurs the boundaries of the plot and integrates nature as an inseparable part of living.

The garden surrounds the dwelling and is located entirely above the roof slab of an underground parking garage. The intervention transforms the perimeter of the plot into a continuous domestic landscape, articulated through the relationship between geometry, use, vegetation, and shade.

The plot, rectangular in layout and parallel to the boundaries of the dwelling, creates, on two of its sides, narrow strips that are resolved with curved forms to give depth to the space and blur its limits. This geometry makes it possible to create small outdoor rooms linked to the interior program of the bedrooms, so that each section of the garden becomes a natural extension of domestic use.

The garden as an extension of the house

The softness of the layout is the project’s main resource for expanding the perception of the garden and distancing it from a rigid or residual reading. The inflections of the route introduce small expansions, generate sequences of stay, and make possible a richer and more intimate experience of the outdoor space. The garden is not presented as a single frontal element, but as a set of areas that accompany the house and extend its life outward.

The front area, connected to the living room, concentrates the main outdoor uses. Here are located the swimming pool, the sitting area, and the outdoor dining area, forming the center of the house’s outdoor life. A vegetated pergola formed by mulberry shade trees provides shade, climatic comfort, and a seasonal dimension that characterizes this area and reinforces its habitable character.

Overall, the project creates a perimeter garden that accompanies the dwelling on all sides and transforms a constrained geometry into a spatial opportunity. The result is a rich and everyday outdoor space, capable of expanding the experience of living and establishing a natural and continuous relationship between architecture and landscape.
