In AE LAND, we share a big interest about architecture, design, and details, but most important we share interest about environmental awareness. We are very sensitive when it comes to nature, to flora and fauna and we are very conscious about the impact of every intervention that takes place in a building or a natural environment.
In the surrounding environment both details and the greater whole are equally important for every living being. For us, as designers and as scientists is essential to understand this importance and to participate in the improvement of the space around us in every scale. We are interested in working on a wide range of projects. This is very important for us because it gives us the opportunity to alternate qualities of the small scale to the bigger scale projects (for example the attention of details) and qualities of the bigger scale to the small-scale projects (for example the conception of a project as a whole). In that sense, we like to think of our projects as a continuity of the existing urban and natural space even if it´s a small urban terrace. On the other hand, phasing a public space as if it was a small terrace of a family house, enhances the qualities of the place in many ways. One of them is the approach of the extensive space in a more human scale through the use of high-quality materials.
Working on big scale projects is essential to us because, on one hand, we have the chance to minimize the environmental impact in a big scale and on the other hand, we have the chance to promote nature, happiness, and wellbeing, affecting in this way a bigger percentage of citizens.
As a firm we have a high preference in local natural materials.
In the cities we are surrounded by concrete, in fact, nature and cities are opposite concepts. In a one-to-one scale, being surrounded by natural materials, takes us closer to nature. In a much global scale, natural materials help us creating more energy-efficient spaces and they are much better for the environment. Natural, local materials respond better to the local climate and environmental necessities and in many ways, they are a much more sustainable solution rather than highly processed materials coming from very far away. Circular-economy is also very important for our firm, and non-renewable materials totally oppose to this concept.
Apart of all the above, for us, using natural materials is also a very important matter of aesthetics as we highly prefer natural colours and textures that are much friendlier to human senses.
While choosing plants, the first thing we have in mind is how to create a green space that will not provoke the exhaust of the natural resources and that won’t be causing any ecological damage. As you can imagine, the environmental conditions of the place and the plants’ substrate are very important factors. For that reason, autochthonous species are always on the top of our list options.
In the case of the dry Mediterranean climate of Spain we try working with plants that have low water needs and most importantly they are indigenous. Even in Spain, the environmental conditions differ from place to place, for that reason is very important the detailed study of the place and its conditions and a study of the species that grow in that particular place.
Apart of all the above, other factors that influence our choices are the scale of the project, the program needed and of course, the specific preferences of the client.
